John Macnamara, along with his wife Olivia, manages a farm in Gormanstown, Hospital, Co. Limerick. Their four children—Caoimhe, Conor, Ailbhe, and Padraic—actively participate in the daily operations, reinforcing the Macnamara family’s core values through their shared work. The farm’s heritage dates back to John’s father, Pat, who passed the reins to John after he completed his Green Cert at Teagasc, Kilmallock. John’s passion for farming was cultivated early on, being the eldest of six children, where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep connection to the land. He takes great pride in producing top-quality milk, knowing it will soon reach consumers’ tables.
Recently, John was honoured as the overall winner of the 2023 National Dairy Council and Kerrygold Quality Milk Awards, a competition often referred to as the ‘Oscars of the Dairy World’ or the ‘Liam MacCarthy of farming.’ This award recognizes excellence in milk quality, animal welfare, and sustainable farming practices. John has also been recognised with several other accolades, including FBD Young Farmer of the Year 2005, Farmyard of the Year 2009, and Grassland Farmer of the Year 2018.
In February 2024, the Mayor of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr Gerald Mitchell, hosted a Mayoral Reception in honour of John and his family. During the ceremony in the Council Chambers, the Mayor presented John with a commemorative scroll, celebrating his achievements in farming and acknowledging his significant voluntary contributions to his local community, including his involvement with Knockainey, Macra na Feirme, local schools, and Ladies Football at both club and county levels.
